The Waikato Times recently spoke with Assured Property’s CEO John Kenel, to learn his insights on the recent Hamilton City Council proposal. The suggested changes – which plan for increased charges on property developers – will add tens of thousands of dollars to development costs, at a time when the city is struggling to accommodate its growing population.
“Doubling the development contributions from one day to the next – at a time when we have a dire shortage of housing – that I just don’t understand,” said John Kenel.
A recent development of John’s, aiming to provide affordable accommodation for the growing Hamilton workforce, required a development contribution of $65,200, for six town houses.
Under the proposed changes, this would increase to $117,785 – approximately $8800 more for each house.
